Togo: Elections, Faure Gnassingbé paves the way for regional structures under the new governance architecture

On April 29, Togo is set to hold its legislative and regional elections, a decision reached during the cabinet meeting on April 9 under President Faure Gnassingbé’s leadership.

These regional elections mark a significant step in Togo’s decentralization efforts, building upon previous local elections held a few years ago.

The upcoming regional elections aim to elect regional councillors tasked with driving grassroots development initiatives.

To support these elected officials in their roles, the government has issued a decree outlining the procedures for convening the regional councillors, defining the objectives of their inaugural meeting, and establishing the overarching framework for the internal regulations of the regional council.

This decree, spearheaded by President Faure Gnassingbé and his administration, signifies a crucial milestone in the implementation of Togo’s new governance structure.

The responsibilities of these councillors, as outlined in the decree, encompass promoting territorial development and contributing significantly to enhancing the quality of life for Togolese citizens.

This strategic move reinforces Togo’s commitment to decentralization and local empowerment.
