Diplomacy: Israel recalls its Ambassador as South Africa criticizes Gaza operations

In response to recent critical statements made by South Africa regarding Israel’s military operation in Gaza, Israel has recalled its ambassador from South Africa “for consultations”.

South Africa has been vocal in its condemnation of Israel’s actions and has called for an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

This move comes ahead of a virtual summit of the Brics group, including China and Russia, hosted by South Africa to discuss the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Additionally, South Africa’s parliament is expected to vote on closing the Israeli embassy and suspending diplomatic relations until Israel agrees to a cease-fire and UN-facilitated negotiations.

The African National Congress supports the motion, but the government’s stance remains uncertain. Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, initiated in response to a cross-border attack, has faced criticism globally, with calls for humanitarian pauses from the UN Security Council.

South Africa, a longstanding supporter of the Palestinian cause, has been particularly critical, describing Israel’s response as “collective punishment.”

The country, along with others, has referred the matter to the ICC for investigation into potential war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
