Bahrain: Reforms and modernisation – the course set for the country by Prince Salman bin Hamad
Since his appointment as Prime Minister in November 2020, Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa has established himself as the architect of an ambitious political vision for Bahrain. At 56, this graduate of the American University in Washington and Cambridge embodies the modernization of Bahraini institutions and the economic transformation of the kingdom.
His political vision revolves around the “Bahrain Economic Vision 2030,” a comprehensive strategy launched in 2008 under his chairmanship of the Economic Development Board.
This plan aims to transition Bahrain from an oil-dependent economy to a productive and globally competitive economy, capable of providing well-paid jobs to its citizens and raising the standard of living for all Bahrainis.
Three guiding principles underpin this vision: sustainability, competitiveness, and fairness. The Crown Prince intends to build “a just, prosperous, and cohesive society” in which every Bahraini household would double its disposable income by 2030.
This approach reflects his conviction that economic development must be accompanied by social justice and the inclusion of all citizens in national prosperity.
On the institutional level, Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa embodies the reformist wing of the regime.
According to the BTI 2026 Country Report, his appointment as Prime Minister consolidated the reformist wing’s control over the country’s two most powerful offices, alongside his father, King Hamad.
Although the regime does not aim for full democratic transformation, the Crown Prince believes in the positive impact of partial democratization and liberalization of the political system to maintain social cohesion and channel tensions within the opposition.
His vision also extends to strategic infrastructure. He recently stressed the importance of the Electricity and Water Networks Control Center in improving infrastructure efficiency and supporting growth. Similarly, he emphasizes exploring investment opportunities in the energy sector to strengthen Bahrain’s position and create quality jobs for its population.
The Crown Prince also plays a key role in attracting foreign investment. In May 2026, he chaired a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Bahrain Economic Development Board, reviewing objectives for 2026 and initiatives aimed at highlighting the kingdom’s competitive advantages in international markets.
Through this holistic vision, Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa positions Bahrain as a regional economic hub while preserving the kingdom’s political and social stability.
His reformist leadership, combined with a pragmatic approach to development, makes him the face of Bahraini modernization.
