Senegal’s Historic Qualification for 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations

This Tuesday, at the Al Salam Stadium in Cairo, Egypt, the Senegalese women’s team, managed to hold the Pharaohs to a goalless draw, securing their historic qualification for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). This marks Senegal’s second consecutive participation in the prestigious African football event.

For the first time in the competition’s history, the Lionesses have earned their spot in Morocco, the host country for the upcoming edition of the Women’s AFCON.

Following their impressive 4-0 victory in the first leg at the Lat Dior Stadium in Thiès, located 70 kilometers from Dakar, where Marème Babou (26’), Nguénar Ndiaye (30’), Hapsatou Malado Diallo (68’), and Mbayang Sow (88’) scored, the team secured a goalless draw in Cairo today.

Under the guidance of coach Mame Moussa Cissé, the Lionesses will head to the Kingdom of Morocco with the goal of surpassing the quarter-finals, which currently stands as Senegal’s best performance in the 2024 WAFCON.

This qualification further solidifies the growing prominence of women’s football in Senegal and raises promising expectations for their journey in the upcoming edition of the continental competition.
