UEFA introduces new rules for Euro 2024 to improve Referee communication and match flow

UEFA has introduced a new rule for Euro 2024 to simplify communication between referees and players and increase the effective playing time.

Only team captains will be allowed to speak to referees, except when the captain is the goalkeeper, in which case an outfield player will be designated. Players violating this rule will receive a yellow card.

The aim of this measure is to clarify on-field exchanges and reduce interruptions, thereby improving the match pace. Although specific to Euro 2024, this rule could be adopted by other federations.

Additionally, for the first time, VAR decisions will be broadcast live in stadiums with technical explanations provided by the referees.

This transparency, inspired by the 2023 Women’s World Cup, will help commentators better inform viewers.

The VAR will continue to check clear and obvious errors related to goals, incidents in the penalty area, red cards, and mistaken identity, aiming to reduce VAR interventions while using semi-automatic offside technology to save time.
