Turkey observes National Mourning for Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh following his assassination

On Friday, August 2, Turkey observed a national day of mourning for Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas leader recently assassinated in Tehran, Iran.

Following a presidential decree, Turkish flags were lowered to half-staff across the country and at Turkish missions abroad until sunset.

The assassination of Haniyeh has sparked significant outrage in Turkey. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan condemned the act as “despicable,” reflecting Turkey’s stance on Hamas.

While many Western nations classify Hamas as a terrorist organization, Turkey views it as a “liberation movement.”

As Haniyeh is laid to rest in Qatar on Friday, Hamas has declared a “Day of Rage,” blaming Israel for the assassination.

The accusation has also been echoed by Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah, further straining regional tensions.
