Togo’s Ministry of Human Rights takes action to prevent electoral violence

The Ministry of Human Rights in Togo is taking proactive measures to prevent violence during electoral periods. In this initiative, the ministry has devised a series of activities aimed at promoting peaceful and democratic elections.

On Tuesday, the institution organized a platform for exchange and awareness targeting young members of political parties, representatives from civil society, and the media.

During this meeting, participants were briefed on democratic culture and strategies for preventing potential crises and violence during elections.

This explains the choice of the main theme: «Respect for Democratic Standards and Principles: A Factor in Preventing Crises and Violence During Electoral Periods».

The initiative aligns with the upcoming regional and legislative elections scheduled for 2024, as explained by Oubo M’Bo, the Director of Democratic Strengthening at the Ministry of Human Rights: «In Africa, and particularly in Togo, elections of any kind often witness violence in various forms, be it verbal, physical, psychological, or structural. Given the current context, Togolese citizens are preparing to cast their votes to elect regional councillors and renew parliamentary representation».

Regarding the selection of this demographic to convey the message of non-violence, Mr. Oubo M’Bo indicated: «Often used as instruments to generate violence, young people were at the heart of discussions aimed at raising awareness about the importance of democratic fair play».

During the seminar, various topics were covered, including the dynamics of electoral participation in new democracies in West Africa.

Discussions also focused on themes such as «violence during electoral periods with its manifestations and consequences» and «the role of different actors in the prevention of electoral violence».
