Togo:  the Celebration of «Ayiza» the Bean harvest Festival: A Cultural Heritage and a Symbol of Unity

A highly significant event took place this weekend in the heart of the Zio prefecture in Togo’s Maritime Region. The people of this region celebrated the traditional “Ayiza” harvest festival, with great joy and pride. This major event brought local residents together in a spirit of celebration, sharing and unity, while highlighting the cultural aspects and development of the region.

Under the theme «Unity in Diversity and Harmonious and Participatory Development», this emblematic event was honoured by the presence of high-ranking personalities, including the President of the National Assembly, representative of the Head of State, as well as several members of the government.

The annual celebration of Ayiza dates back more than half a century, and has its roots in the history and culture of the Ewe people.

This memorable event commemorates the historic exodus of the Ewe people, highlighting their resilience and determination to preserve their traditions and identity despite hardship.

Beyond its historical aspect, Ayiza also celebrates the vital importance of bean farming in the Zio region.

As an essential agricultural crop, beans play a central role in local life and the local economy.

This festive celebration is therefore an ideal opportunity to recognise and honour the hard work of the farmers and producers of the beans.

The event was marked by an atmosphere of popular fervour, with locals coming together to take part in a variety of cultural and leisure activities.

Folk dances added a touch of energy and dynamism, recalling the traditions and customs that make up the cultural richness of the region.

A demonstration of farming activities gave visitors a close-up view of traditional agricultural practices and local expertise in the field.

Exhibitions of local products showcased the region’s rich culinary and craft heritage. One of the most striking features of the celebration was the hunting

simulation, a traditional activity that recalls the ancestral skills of the region’s hunters.

The Ayiza harvest Bean Festival in Togo is much more than just a cultural celebration. It is a living testimony to the deep attachment of the people of Zio to their historical roots and cultural heritage.
