Togo: Strengthening maritime security with the establishment of the Togolese Coast Guard Unit

The creation of the Togolese Coast Guard Unit, formalized by the decree adopted during the Council of Ministers on January 12, 2024, holds paramount importance for national maritime security. This initiative stems from the growing need to establish a dedicated structure for the continuous surveillance of Togo’s maritime space.

The main objective of this unit is to enhance the effectiveness of the interministerial organization of the state’s civil action at sea.

This approach aims to improve coordination between different administrations and foster closer cooperation in the maritime context.

Indeed, the evolving security challenges in the maritime sector have underscored the need for specific handling, distinct from defense missions, to better address challenges related to the state’s civil action at sea.

The decree formalizing the creation of this unit demonstrates the commitment of the Togolese government to ensure enhanced maritime surveillance.

The missions assigned to the Togolese Coast Guard Unit include combating illicit activities of canoes outside monitored areas, preventing sea pollution, and, more generally, maintaining security in Togo’s territorial waters.

This initiative aligns with a broader perspective of protecting national maritime interests and contributing to regional security.

It also reflects Togo’s willingness to adapt to new security realities and promote a proactive approach in managing its maritime space.

By strengthening surveillance and intervention capabilities at sea, the Togolese Coast Guard Unit is expected to significantly contribute to preserving security and stability in the maritime region of Togo.
