Togo: President Faure Gnassingbé’s plea to the UN

During his address at the Future Summit in New York, part of the 79th United Nations General Assembly on September 23, 2024, the President of Togo Faure Gnassingbé called for a unified and comprehensive approach to global crises.

Speaking to an audience of world leaders, experts, and civil society representatives, President Gnassingbé stressed the urgency of enhancing international cooperation to tackle pressing issues such as food insecurity, environmental challenges, and global security.

He highlighted the need to reinvent multilateralism and reform outdated global institutions, arguing that a collective effort within renewed international frameworks is vital for building a better future.

He also advocated for greater respect and fair representation of African nations on the global stage, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that all voices are heard.

Expressing confidence in Africa’s future, President Gnassingbé pointed out the continent’s readiness for new partnerships, driven by its youthful population and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

He advocated for expanding public-private partnerships and creating favorable conditions for private investment, particularly in the green and blue economies.

However, the Togolese leader was critical of international aid, stating that it often fails to meet the real needs of the people.

He suggested that African nations should take a more prominent role in shaping development assistance, positioning themselves as strategic and equal partners.

For Togo, Gnassingbé emphasized the importance of building a strong state, capable of leading development and humanitarian efforts.

He underscored the need for close collaboration between the state, the private sector, and civil society to implement sustainable and tailored solutions for the country’s development.
