Togo: Human Development Index, when the country performs well every year

Under the leadership of President Faure Gnassingbé, Togo has implemented a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing its Human Development Index (HDI), which evaluates countries based on health, income, and education levels.

Health and longevity improvements

Significant strides have been made in Togo’s healthcare sector. The government has invested heavily in health infrastructure, enhancing access to primary healthcare services, and tackling endemic diseases such as malaria and HIV/AIDS.

These efforts have contributed to a decrease in infant mortality rates, supported by expanded vaccination programs and nutritional interventions.

Economic growth and income

Togo’s economic policies have focused on fostering growth and alleviating poverty.

Key reforms have been introduced to improve the business environment, attract foreign investment, and support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Consequently, the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita has seen growth. However, equitable distribution of wealth remains a significant challenge.

Educational advancements

The government has prioritized access to quality education. The introduction of free primary education and the construction of new schools have boosted enrollment rates.

Continuous training programs for teachers and initiatives to promote girls’ education have been implemented, effectively reducing gender disparities in education.

HDI progress

These comprehensive efforts have led to a gradual improvement in Togo’s HDI. The latest reports indicate an increase from 0.539 in 2021-2022 to 0.547 in 2023-2024. Additionally, the Gross National Income (GNI) per capita rose from $2,167 to $2,214 over the same period.

Regional leadership

Togo continues to lead within the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), maintaining its top position for the second consecutive year.

Within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Togo has achieved a commendable fourth-place ranking this year.

Future challenges

Despite these advancements, Togo is still categorized as a country with medium human development.

The ongoing challenge is to sustain and accelerate these improvements to achieve sustainable and inclusive human development.

These achievements reflect the effectiveness of the policies and programs executed under President Faure Gnassingbé’s administration.

The primary goal moving forward is to ensure that these gains are maintained and expanded to secure a prosperous future for all Togolese citizens.
