Togo: A pillar of peace and security in West Africa, present at the 79th UN General Assembly.

President Faure Gnassingbé is participating in the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which commenced on September 22, 2024, in New York. This year’s theme, “Leave No One Behind: Act Together for Peace, Sustainable Development, and Human Dignity for Present and Future Generations,” underscores the significance of the event for Togo, as it allows the nation to reaffirm its leading role in promoting peace and security in West Africa.

In recent years, Togo has distinguished itself through its active commitment to conflict resolution and regional stability.

Under President Gnassingbé’s leadership, the country has emerged as a key mediator in West African crises, particularly within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Togo has played a vital role in facilitating dialogue and collaboration among various conflict stakeholders, helping to ease tensions and foster sustainable political solutions.

Togo’s contributions extend beyond diplomacy. Togolese contingents are deployed in several UN peacekeeping missions, including in Mali, Côte d’Ivoire, and the Central African Republic. These forces have earned a reputation for professionalism and neutrality, essential qualities for managing the complex conflicts in the region.

By participating in this UN General Assembly, Togo also reaffirms its commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For President Gnassingbé, peace and security are intrinsically linked to human development.

The Togolese government’s ambitious economic and social reforms prioritize human welfare, aligning seamlessly with the assembly’s theme.

Thus, Togo’s presence at this assembly is particularly significant. By highlighting its active role in regional peace and its vision for sustainable development, the country demonstrates that it is not only a key player in West African security but also a global partner dedicated to building a more peaceful and equitable future.
