Sovereignty assertion and regional autonomy: Burkina Faso’s Prime Minister addresses the creation of the Alliance of Sahel States

On March 4, 2024,  the Prime Minister of Faso,Dr. Apollinaire Joachimson Kyélèm de Tambèla presided over the flag-raising ceremony at the Prime Minister’s office in Ouagadougou.

During this event, he addressed the pivotal issue of the creation of the Alliance of the Sahel States (AES) and underscored the significance for the people of Burkina Faso to assert their sovereignty and break free from any form of subjugation to Western nations.

Refuting criticisms that the procedure for establishing the AES had not adhered to due processes, Dr. Kyélèm de Tambèla emphasized that similar organizations, such as the ECOWAS, had followed comparable processes without prior public consultation.

Furthermore, he recalled historical precedents where other regional organizations had been established without referendums, highlighting two forms of legitimacy: one that is superficial and alienating, and another that is real and authentic, enjoyed by the authorities of the AES.

The Prime Minister urged the citizens of Burkina Faso to reject any form of political and cultural alienation towards Western powers and to affirm their sovereignty.

He stressed that it is time to liberate themselves from the grip of imperialism and its attempts to keep the people of the AES under its control.
