Senegal Starts AFCON title defense with convincing 3-0 victory against Gambia in Group C Opener

In the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, the Group C matches kicked off with the defending champion, Senegal, facing Gambia. Senegal emerged victorious with a 3-0 win in the sibling rivalry.

The defending champions started their title defense on January 15, 2024, at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro. Pape Gueye scored the opening goal for Senegal in the 4th minute, assisted by Sadio Mané.

Gambia, despite showing promise, suffered a setback with Adams’ expulsion just before halftime, leaving them with 10 players. The score at halftime was 1-0 in favor of Senegal.

In the second half, the Lions, taking advantage of the numerical superiority, extended their lead. Lamine Camara, in top form with Tottenham, secured a brace in the 52nd and 86th minutes.

The Lions of Teranga comfortably maintained their three-goal lead until the end of regular time, securing a final score of 3-0.

Senegal, as the reigning champions, started their campaign in impressive fashion, sending a warning to their opponents in Group C.

With this victory, Aliou Cissé and his soldiers takes the lead in the group, pending the outcome of the second match between Cameroon and Guinea.
