Senegal: First oil extracted by woodside Energy

Woodside Energy, the Australian energy giant, announced a significant breakthrough on Tuesday as it initiated oil extraction from the Sangomar field off Senegal’s coast.

This achievement marks a crucial milestone in Senegal’s journey as it delves into its first offshore oil project.

Located around 100 km south of Dakar, the Sangomar field holds substantial reserves of oil and gas.

The project aims for a daily output of 100,000 barrels, with Woodside Energy working in tandem with Senegal’s National Oil Company (Petrosen).

This inaugural extraction signals a pivotal moment in Senegal’s energy sector and economic growth.

Meanwhile, another major venture, the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project, is progressing at the maritime border between Senegal and Mauritania.

Led by BP from the UK, Kosmos Energy from the US, Mauritania’s National Oil Company (SMH), and Petrosen, this initiative targets an annual production of approximately 2.5 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Operations are slated to commence in the third quarter of this year.

A vital part of the GTA project, the floating production, storage, and offloading unit (FPSO), has been successfully positioned at its designated site.

This infrastructure is crucial for Phase 1 of the GTA development, focusing on sustained LNG production over a span of more than 20 years.

The GTA project represents Senegal’s first foray into gas development in the newly explored offshore basin along the Senegal-Mauritania coastal region.

The initiation of production at Sangomar and the advancements in the GTA project mark Senegal’s ascent as a significant player in the global energy landscape.

These initiatives not only bring economic opportunities but also highlight the burgeoning potential of Senegal’s energy industry.
