Remarkable Feat: 70-Year-old woman gives Birth to Twins in Uganda

In Uganda, a 70-year-old woman has successfully given birth to twins following fertility treatment, solidifying her position as one of the world’s oldest new mothers. According to Arthur Matsiko, spokesman for the Women’s Hospital International Facility Center, she gave birth to a boy and a girl on Wednesday via cesarean section.

The mother, Safina Namukwaya, and the babies would be in good health and still under observation in a facility in the capital Kampala. She usually lives in the Masaka countryside, about 120 km west of the capital.

Mother Safina, the 70-year-old woman described the birth of the twins on Wednesday as a «miracle». «It’s an extraordinary feat for a 70-year-old mother to give birth to twins», said the doctor, who supervised her pregnancy and delivery.

A First birth three years ago

The septuagenarian had given birth to a daughter just three years ago after being labeled a «cursed woman» for not having a child before.

With her first husband, who died in 1992, she had not had any children. However, her current partner, whom she met in 1996, did not attend the delivery, much to her dismay.

«Perhaps he is not happy that I gave birth to twins (…) for fear of the responsibilities that come with it», she said.
