Nigeria: Gunmen attacked a train station in Edo State.

Gunmen have attacked a train station in Nigeria’s southern Edo state, abducting dozens of passengers, the Nigerian police said.

Police spokesman Chidi Nwabuzor said in a press release that a number of passengers were also injured when gunmen carrying Kalashnikov assault rifles attacked the “Igueben” train station, shooting sporadically into the air.

The police official explained that most of the victims were passengers waiting to board the Itakpe-Wari train.

As a result, security forces rushed to the scene of the attack and began combing the area to rescue the victims and arrest the perpetrators.

Nigeria, a West African country preparing to elect a new president and members of parliament on February 25, is suffering from widespread insecurity.

Kidnappings for ransom by criminal groups are common in the northwest and central parts of the country.

In March, eight people were killed and dozens abducted after gunmen detonated a bomb on a railroad track and opened fire on a train carrying passengers from the capital, Abuja, to Kaduna.
