Niger: UN condemns France’s violation of international law in Niamey

The French Ministry of the Armed Forces recently initiated discussions with the Nigerien army with a view to withdrawing French troops from Niger at the request of the new government. Despite the announcement of the withdrawal of French troops, France is continuing its manoeuvres with the help of certain ECOWAS countries with the aim of carrying out an aggression against Niger.

Since September 1st, the government of Niger has been denouncing French military moves in Benin, Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire directed against its country.

If, since the overthrow of Mohamed Bazoum, ECOWAS, backed by France, has been brandishing a military threat against Niger, we have to wonder.

What would justify any military intervention by ECOWAS in Niger, let alone by France?

According to the UN chargé d’affaires in Niamey, the French government and ECOWAS are violating international law in Niger.

In his letter, Aboubacar Daddo considers that «the search for ways and means to intervene militarily in Niger» and the refusal to repatriate the 1,500 French soldiers present on Nigerien territory are «serious acts likely to undermine France’s international security».
