Niger / The Party of deposed President Mohamed Bazoum distances itself from military intervention by ECOWAS: For a peaceful path in Niger

In a note published on Friday 15 September 2023, the party of  Mohamed Bazoum the deposed Nigerien President, expressed its categorical opposition to any military intervention in Niger by ECOWAS (the Economic Community of West African States). In this statement, the party urges its militants to remain united in finding a peaceful solution to the current challenges facing the country.

After more than a month of waiting and intense debate within the party, voices have been raised in favour of a clear party position, distancing itself from support for armed intervention.

The main concerns centre on the potentially immeasurable consequences of such an intervention on the population and the country, as well as its duration over time, as underlined by the party of Mohamed Bazoum.

The party’s Presidium recognised the need to debate this crucial issue and organised discussions on 2 and 14 September to gather the views of its members.

The results of these discussions were clear, with a clear majority against armed intervention.

In its official statement, the party reaffirmed its original objectives, while stressing the importance of distancing itself from any military intervention in the search for solutions to the current crisis.

The party insisted on the need to strengthen its unity and cohesion in order to deal with the current complex situation.

The CEN Presidium strongly appealed to comrades to focus on these essential objectives.

It urged an end to all unnecessary debates that could weaken and divide the party, reducing its ability to negotiate agreements and alliances with other political partners.

This statement marks an important turning point in the party’s political position and underlines its commitment to a peaceful resolution of the crisis in Niger.
