Niger: The CNSP denounces France’s interference in internal affairs

The new authorities in Niger were dismayed to learn of the comments made by the French President on Monday 28 August 2023. The latest statements by Mr Emmanuel Macron, were very badly perceived by the CNSP. This Friday, September 1st, the gave its opinion on this situation.

France wants to interfere in Niger’s internal affairs at all costs. The ruling military does not approve of this.

«Mr Macron’s comments and his incessant efforts to invade Niger are aimed at perpetuating a neo-colonialist enterprise against the people of Niger, who want nothing more than to decide their own destiny», declared CNSP spokesman Colonel-Major Amadou Abdramane.

For the new authorities, the differences with France are not about relations between peoples or individuals, but about the relevance of the French military presence in Niger.

The remarks criticised by the Niger authorities were made by French President Emmanuel Macron at a time of great tension.

In particular, he stated that the French ambassador should remain in post despite the injunctions of the authorities.

However, the CNSP was determined to enforce its decision.

Once the ultimatum had expired, the military ordered the expulsion of the French ambassador.

This came as a surprise to France. The CNSP is determined to safeguard the country’s sovereignty.
