Niger: Military force “the last resort” according to former president Mahamadou Issoufou

Former Nigerien President Mahamadou Issoufou has broken his silence and expressed support for a military intervention by ECOWAS in the Republic of Niger to restore constitutional order.

He referred to it as the “last resort,” though he didn’t openly condemn the overthrow of his successor.

Mahamadou Issoufou is ready to send his fellow citizens (the people of Niger) to the slaughterhouse because he welcomes ECOWAS’s decision to deploy its “standby force” in Niger.

Issoufou’s alignment with ECOWAS and his apparent approval of the deployment of the standby force suggests his endorsement of his close associate, Mohamed Bazoum’s return to power.

The new Nigerien authorities remain unpertubed by ECOWAS’ position favoring a military solution.

It’s worth noting that Mohamed Bazoum, a former ally of Issoufou, succeeded him as the candidate of the Party for Democracy and Socialism in the 2020 presidential elections.
