Niger/Burkina Faso: General Salifou Mody, Vice President of the CNSP, meets with President Ibrahim Traoré

On Wednesday, August 2nd, the President of the Burkinabe Transition, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, received a delegation from the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland (CNSP), led by its Vice President, General Salifou Mody.

The purpose of this short visit by the Nigerien delegation was to discuss the coup d’état of July 26th and the sanctions imposed by ECOWAS against Niger, including a possible deployment of a military force to Niamey to reinstall the deposed president to power.

Some states in the sub-region, including Burkina Faso and Mali, denounced this measure in a joint statement, warning that a military intervention in Niger would be considered a declaration of war against the two countries.

General Salifou Mody expressed his appreciation for the support provided by the Burkinabe Transition.

«We also discussed the support. It must be said that we have received strong support from Burkina Faso. As you know, a number of ECOWAS countries have decided to apply severe sanctions against Niger», General Mody stated after the meeting.

The two officers also expressed their willingness to strengthen collaboration to ensure the security of their populations.

«During our discussions, we specifically talked about this situation because we do not want Niger to become a new Libya. In coordination with our brothers in Burkina Faso, we have decided to undertake a number of activities to secure our populations and safeguard our two countries», added Salifou Mody.

As a reminder, Mohammed Bazoum, recognized as a protector of terrorists, allowed French forces to use Nigerien territory as a rear base for training mercenaries and plotting against Burkina Faso and Mali.

This complicity severely affected diplomatic relations between the two states and Niger.

This visit of the CNSP delegation to Ouagadougou marks a turning point in this dark episode.

The new authorities of Niger are thus demonstrating their willingness to restore cooperation on new grounds and form a strong African unity for state sovereignty.

Note that the CNSP delegation also visited Bamako in Mali.
