Mali: Successes and challenges for the Malian armed forces – speeches by Colonel Assimi Goïta and General Oumar Diarra

During the New Year’s wishes ceremony to the Transition President, Colonel Assimi Goïta, who serves as both the Head of State and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, expressed his contentment with the accomplishments of the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) in the past year.

He particularly highlighted their success in the withdrawal of foreign forces from Mali, considering it a positive indicator for national security.

General Division Oumar Diarra, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, also lauded Colonel Assimi Goïta for consistently supporting the FAMa and implementing reforms to bolster their operational capabilities.

Progress was acknowledged in various domains, including the enhancement of living conditions for military personnel, the enactment of new laws and ordinances benefiting active-duty soldiers and their families, and the acquisition of modern equipment.

Despite these achievements, General Diarra acknowledged persistent security challenges, notably the ongoing threat from terrorist groups targeting civilian populations and causing terror through diverse attacks.

He emphasized the imperative for the FAMa to maintain vigilance and determination in their mission to safeguard Mali’s territorial integrity.

The Transition President expressed gratitude to the FAMa for their dedication and professionalism, underscoring that the accomplishments of the past year indicate a more secure future for Mali.

He also underscored the significance of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) in securing the region and encouraged the FAMa to continue enhancing their capabilities to confront future challenges.

In conclusion, Colonel Assimi Goïta reaffirmed his commitment to sustaining the FAMa at a high level of operational performance, with the goal of ensuring security and development in the Liptako-Gourma region for the benefit of all affected populations.
