Mali / Ivory Coast: President Faure Gnassingbé on a friendship and working visit.

The Togolese Head of State Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé travelled this Wednesday evening to Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire where he exchanged with his Ivorian counterpart, Alassane Ouattara.

The talks between Faure Gnassingbé and Alassane Ouattara in Abidjan focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation. The two leaders also discussed regional issues of peace, security and stability.

Furthermore, the Togolese Head of State, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé also paid a friendship and working visit to his counterpart, Colonel Assimi Goita, in Mali on Wednesday 4 January 2023.

“The President of the Republic, H.E. Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, is paying a working and friendship visit to Bamako in Mali on 4 January 2023,” said a statement from the presidency. The head of state, the note continued, “was welcomed at Modibo Kéita International Airport by his Malian counterpart, Colonel Assimi Goïta, President of the Transition.

After a first face-to-face meeting in the VIP lounge, the Head of State and his host went to the Koulouba Palace to deepen their reflections on the mechanisms for strengthening cooperation between Lomé and Bamako.

The agenda of the visit included: “Cooperation between Togo and Mali, as well as regional issues of common interest, will be at the heart of the face-to-face meeting between the two leaders”. In addition, the two heads of state will also discuss peace, security and regional integration.

As a reminder, Faure Gnassingbé is playing the role of mediator in the case of 46 Ivorian soldiers sentenced to 20 years in prison last week in Mali. The Togolese President has constantly pleaded for the maintenance of dialogue and consultation between the brotherly countries for a satisfactory resolution of the various situations. Togolese diplomacy had obtained last September that three women among the 49 detained soldiers recover their freedom and return to their country.
