John Mikel Obi Criticizes dual-national players’ choices

Former Super Eagles midfielder John Mikel Obi has stirred up a significant debate in the contemporary football world, focusing on the contentious issue of dual-national players.

According to Obi, these players are opportunists who turn to their African countries of origin only after being overlooked by European nations they have long awaited to represent.

“Your father is Nigerian, your mother is Nigerian, so why not represent Nigeria?” Obi questioned. He criticized African dual-nationals for aspiring to play for countries like England or France, waiting years for a call-up, and then turning to African nations when they reach 25 and have not been selected by European teams.

“We should not be considered a second option, and we are not second options. You must be proud of your African roots. You should be proud to represent your African country. If you prefer to play for England, I would rather you stick to that decision and not come back years later. You wait for the call from England. If it comes, fine; if it doesn’t, don’t come back,” Obi stated emphatically on his podcast, “The Obi One.”

The former Chelsea player’s remarks have sparked conversations about the loyalty and decision-making processes of dual-national players in football.

Obi’s stance is clear: players should honor their roots and make definitive choices about their international careers without treating their African heritage as a fallback option.
