Joe Biden faces political survival crisis amid democratic concerns

Following a disastrous debate that sparked panic among Democrats, President Joe Biden, 81, is fighting for his political survival.

His team is working tirelessly to allay fears about his age and cognitive abilities, striving to prove he can defeat Donald Trump.

However, according to sources from the New York Times and CNN, Biden is not ruling out stepping down if he cannot manage the crisis in the coming days.

If  Joe Biden withdraws, Democrats will need to quickly choose a replacement, a process that could be chaotic and divisive, culminating at the party convention in late August.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama is the only Democrat polling ahead of Trump, according to a Reuters/Ipsos survey, with 50% support to Trump’s 39%.

However, she has consistently rejected the idea of running for president.

In the event of Biden’s withdrawal, Vice President Kamala Harris is a key contender.

She has been a prominent advocate for abortion rights, a critical issue for Democrats since the Supreme Court overturned Roe V. Wade in 2022.

Harris, a former California prosecutor, could leverage her legal background against a Republican candidate facing criminal charges.

Despite her greater national visibility, Harris has struggled with low approval ratings throughout her vice presidency, raising concerns among Democrats.

However, a CNN poll conducted after the June 27 debate suggests a tighter race with Harris leading the Democratic ticket (45% support to Trump’s 47%) compared to Biden or other potential candidates.
