Golden Globes 2024: This year’s edition lived up to all its promises

On Sunday, January 7, 2024, the 81st edition of the Golden Globes, one of the most glamorous events organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), took place, honoring the best films and series of 2023. Highly anticipated, the Golden Globes made a grand comeback.

In recent years, the ceremony had been marred by numerous controversies and scandals.

Initially, due to the pandemic, and then facing accusations of racism, sexism, and corruption targeting the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which forms the jury.

In 2022, the ceremony was snubbed by the American network NBC, which decided not to broadcast the award ceremony.

It decided to make a strong comeback in 2023 with a ceremony that exuded calm and glamour, aired on CBS.

What will be remembered from the year 2023, in cinematic terms, is primarily the «Barbenheimer» phenomenon in July, or perhaps the filmed concerts of Taylor Swift and Beyoncé this fall.

Two events recognized by the Golden Globes: Barbie was crowned with 10 nominations, including 3 in the Best Original Song category (a title it eventually won for Billie Eilish’s song “What Was I Made For”).

The script by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach was also nominated. It was closely followed by Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which received 8 nominations and was awarded Best Film that night.

Killers of the Flower Moon followed closely with 7 nominations, followed by “Pauvres Créatures”, set to be released on January 17, 2024, in France, with 6 nominations.

Taylor Swift was nominated with her film “The Eras Tour” in the category of the best box office success.

An award that ultimately went to Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.

In the race for the Oscars, Anatomy of a Fall had been snubbed in favor of Tran Anh Hung’s La Passion de Dodin Bouffant in the foreign film category. At the Golden Globes, it triumphed.

Justine Triet’s film was nominated in some of the most prestigious categories: Best Film, Best Screenplay, and Best Actress for Sandra Hüller.

An award that ultimately went to Lily Gladstone. A crowning achievement for a brilliant, thrilling film from which no one could emerge unscathed.

Led by Sandra Hüller’s performance, Justine Triet’s film denounces the treatment of unconventional women by society. Sandra’s character is in every way the nemesis of patriarchy: an ambitious bisexual woman who is unequivocally more famous and talented than her husband, who works in the same field – literature.

All these traits will be reproached by the terrible lawyer played by Antoine Reinartz, annoyingly biased. With its impeccable cast, the film also allows the very young Milo Machado Graner to win his first César nomination as Best Male Revelation.
