Ghana: The Electoral Commission approves 13 Candidates for December Presidential election

The Electoral Commission of Ghana has announced the approval of thirteen (13) candidates for the upcoming presidential election scheduled for Saturday, December 7.

Notably absent from the list is current President Nana Akufo-Addo, who is completing his second and final term as mandated by the constitution.

Among the leading contenders are Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, representing the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), and opposition leader John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).  Both are widely seen as the frontrunners in the race for the presidency.

The list of independent candidates includes former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen and young entrepreneur Nana Kwame Bediako.

Kyerematen, who parted ways with the NPP following internal conflicts, is running as an independent, while Bediako is campaigning on a Pan-African platform aimed at empowering Ghana’s youth.

A total of 24 candidates initially submitted applications for the November 2024 presidential race, but only thirteen were approved after a thorough review by the Electoral Commission to ensure all legal requirements were met.
