Ghana: FBI Joins Investigation into Former Minister Cecilia Abena Dapaah’s Alleged Wealth

Cecilia Abena Dapaah, a former Ghanaian Minister of Sanitation who was already under investigation for alleged corruption in her own country, now faces scrutiny from the FBI in the United States. The Special Prosecutor’s Office, responsible for corruption cases involving government officials, judges, or prominent members of political parties, announced that the FBI would be involved in the investigation of the financial transactions of the former government official.

The Attorney General specified that the collaboration between the Ghanaian justice system and the U.S. Bureau would primarily focus on examining the assets and financial transactions of Ms. Cecilia Abena Dapaah in the United States.

The goal is to verify the legality of her wealth and that of her associates by tracing financial flows between Ghana and the United States.

Cecilia Abena Dapaah, who resigned after being arrested and released on bail in July, is suspected of corruption and embezzlement of public funds.

The case began with a reported robbery at her home, where substantial amounts of cash and other valuable items were stolen.

These revelations have shocked the public, especially as Ghana is going through a major economic crisis.

The local chapter of Transparency International, the Ghana Integrity Initiative, considers this case a crucial test of the government’s commitment to fighting corruption, and its outcome will be closely monitored by the Ghanaian citizens.
