Football/South Sudan marks historic Milestone with Juba National Stadium Inauguration

On June 11, 2024, South Sudan celebrated a historic event with the grand opening of the Juba National Stadium. The ceremony was attended by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, alongside South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit and Football Federation President Augustino Parek.

FIFA’s Significant Investment

FIFA invested nearly $7 million (5.49 million pounds sterling) in constructing this modern sports facility, demonstrating a commitment to developing football infrastructure in emerging nations.

Today, through football, we unite the world, we unite South Sudan, we unite Africa, and we unite all who love our game,” Infantino said during his inaugural address.

First-ever World Cup Qualifier in South Sudan

The opening was marked by South Sudan hosting its first FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying match.

Despite the ‘Bright Stars’ falling 3-0 to Sudan, the event was a landmark moment, highlighting the nation’s arrival on the global football stage.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit expressed immense pride: “Today, we inaugurate our first modern sports facility, the Juba National Stadium. This is a significant step in our nation’s history and a testament to our commitment to building a just and prosperous country.”

Infantino emphasized the event’s broader significance: “We are doing this here, in your capital, Juba. I am very happy and proud to witness this historic day, June 11, 2024, and this historic match.”
