Foot /Champions’league: PSG suffers a defeat at Saint James’ Park against Newcastle

On a dark Wednesday for Paris Saint-Germain, the French capital club suffered a 4-1 defeat against a spirited Newcastle United at the heated St. James’ Park during the second matchday of the UEFA Champions’ League group stage (Group F). Since its acquisition by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, Newcastle has reemerged as a major player in the Premier League, and their return to European competition has been impressive.

Newcastle started strongly, putting pressure on PSG’s defense. A mistake by Marquinhos allowed Guimarães to head the ball into the path of Alexander Isak, who forced a save from Donnarumma before Almiron (17′, 1-0) capitalized on the rebound to open the scoring.

Miguel Almiron, who arrived in England in January 2019, scored his 28th career goal for Newcastle and his first in the Champions League.

Facing a struggling PSG side with Mbappé finding it hard to make an impact, Newcastle continued to press and doubled their lead before halftime.

Bruno Guimarães had two shots saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma, and Burn (39′, 2-0) headed home the rebound. Newcastle was clearly the dominant team on the field.

After halftime, the Magpies’ fans continued to support their team vociferously, and Sean Longstaff (50′, 3-0) added a third goal with an assist from Kieran Trippier.

PSG’s defense also made errors, with Donnarumma failing to stop the shot.

Lucas Hernandez pulled one back for PSG (56′, 3-1), but Newcastle sealed the win with a fourth goal in injury time, as Schär (90’+1, 4-1) capitalized on Ramos’ mistake.

In the end, Newcastle convincingly won 4-1 and took the lead in Group F with 4 points.

Paris Saint-Germain struggled to match the impressive performance of the home team.
