Foot/2023 CAF Champions League : 11th star for Al Ahly in C1. The Egyptians defeated the Moroccans of Wydad Casablanca

Al Ahly wins the 2023 CAF Champions League for the 11th after a 1-1 tie with Morocco’s Wydad on Sunday.

After losing 2-1 in the Egyptian capital in last Sunday’s first leg, Wydad had been on course to win on the away goals rule after fullback Yahya Attiat Allah scored a 27th-minute free kick to hand the home team the lead in front of an expectant 50,000-strong crowd at Casabalanca’s Mohamed V Stadium.

However, in the 78th minute, Al Ahly’s defender Mohamed Abdelmonem scored, bringing the game to a tie, and his team closer to winning the championship.

Wydad Casablanca earned their spot in the final for the second year in a row after a 2-2 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on May 20. They advanced based on the away goals rule.

Al Ahly, on the other hand, reached the final by beating Raja Casablanca in the quarter-finals and Esperance Tunis in the semi-finals, without conceding any goals in their previous four Champions League matches.

Last year, Wydad AC secured the title with a 2-0 victory over Al Ahly in the final, led by Walid Regragui, who currently coaches Morocco’s national team.

With this 2023 CAF Champions League , Al Ahly holds the record for the most Champions League titles in Africa with 11 wins, while Wydad has won the title three times.
