FIFA unveils Year-end rankings for 2023: Argentina leads, Africa prepares for AFCON

In the latest FIFA rankings released on December 21, the world football governing body revealed the standings for the year 2023. These monthly rankings are determined by an algorithm that adjusts teams’ points based on their international match performances. Although all matches are considered, their significance varies depending on the competition level and the opponent’s quality. With only 11 matches played since the last ranking in late November, the top 10 positions remain unchanged.

Global Top 5:

  1. Argentina: 1855.20 pts
  2. France: 1845.44 pts
  3. England: 1800.05 pts
  4. Belgium: 1798.46 pts
  5. Brazil: 1784.09 pts

While Argentina retains its top position a year after winning the 2022 World Cup, France and England follow closely in the second and third spots, respectively. Belgium and Brazil complete the top five.

Top 10 Nations: 6. Netherlands: 1745.48 pts

  1. Portugal: 1745.06 pts
  2. Spain: 1732.64 pts
  3. Italy: 1718.82 pts
  4. Croatia: 1717.57 pts

As the African Cup of Nations in CĂ´te d’Ivoire approaches (January 13 – February 11), the top 10 African nations in the FIFA rankings are:

  1. Morocco (13th)
  2. Senegal (20th)
  3. Tunisia (28th)
  4. Algeria (30th)
  5. Egypt (33rd)
  6. Nigeria (42nd)
  7. Cameroon (46th)
  8. CĂ´te d’Ivoire (49th)
  9. Mali (51st)
  10. Burkina Faso (57th).

These rankings set the stage for an exciting year of football, with continental competitions and international tournaments on the horizon.
