ECOWAS Parliament: Togo’s Presidency faces numerous challenges and crises

On May 23, Togolese MP Honorable Mémounatou Ibrahima was appointed head of Ecowas parliament.

On Monday, July 1, 2024, in Abuja, Nigeria, she officially inaugurated the first ordinary session of the year.

This session, set to last three weeks, will address several critical issues. Honorable Ibrahima has taken over an institution facing challenging times, marked by crises and obstacles requiring appropriate solutions that meet the community’s aspirations.

She pledged to uphold the commitments of the sub-regional organization, focusing on strengthening ties among member countries and promoting the integration of the community’s peoples.

The primary session aims to tackle various challenges and crises, including the conflict between Niger and Benin, the withdrawal of three states from ECOWAS, and upcoming elections in member countries.

Security challenges related to terrorism, which threaten the lives of community members, will also be addressed.

Additionally, issues such as violent extremism, grand banditry, economic challenges, poverty, food insecurity, irregular migration, and the adverse effects of climate change are on the agenda.

For ECOWAS Parliament President Mémounatou Ibrahima, the pursuit of peace should be a guiding principle for the organization’s parliamentarians, driving the implementation of genuine development plans at both national and regional levels.

She was elected for a four-year term, succeeding Sierra Leonean Sidie Mohammed Tunis.
