President Tshisekedi convenes Defense council to address escalating conflict in Eastern Congo

President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), also the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC), has gathered the Superior Defense Council to tackle pressing security issues and ongoing military operations, particularly in the volatile North Kivu region in the east of the country.

This strategic meeting follows recent tumultuous events in eastern Congo, where M23 rebels, allegedly supported by Rwandan military personnel, have unleashed violence against civilians.

President Tshisekedi, utilizing the Superior Defense Council, aims to comprehensively review and adjust national strategies deployed for the liberation of areas under rebel control.

As hostilities intensify between FARDC and M23 rebels, the president, through the Superior Defense Council, is determined to ramp up efforts and apply increased pressure on the rebel forces.

Reports indicate that some cities initially seized by rebels are now being recaptured by the resilient Congolese army, which remains resolute in its commitment to fight until victory is achieved.

In the face of heightened conflict, security authorities are actively working to reassure citizens regarding the defense of the city of Goma and the ongoing efforts to reclaim territories occupied by Rwandan military forces.

President Felix Tshisekedi affirms that the gears of the war machine are in motion to expel the Rwandan forces.

Additionally, the United States has unequivocally called on Rwanda to promptly withdraw its military presence from Congolese territory.
