DRC: MONUSCO reinforces its presence in Kanyabayonga to support the FARDC against the advance of the M23 rebels

On Saturday, June 1, the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) intensified its operations in Kanyabayonga, North Kivu.

These operations aimed to bolster the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) against the advancing M23 rebels.

This intervention aims to protect civilians and stabilize the region, which has been severely affected by escalating conflict.

Blue helmets from MONUSCO’s Brigade and rapid intervention force have been deployed to the area.

Their mission is twofold: to safeguard civilians and to support the FARDC in their efforts to push back the M23 rebels.

Since last Thursday, the town in the Lubero territory has been deserted, as the population fled due to the surge in violence and fierce clashes between government forces and the rebels.

The situation in Kanyabayonga is dire. Continuous fighting has forced residents to flee, leading to a humanitarian crisis as civilians seek refuge away from the conflict zones.

By strengthening its presence, MONUSCO aims to provide a measure of security to these vulnerable populations and stabilize the conflict-ridden region.

Collaboration between MONUSCO and the FARDC is crucial in halting the rebels’ advance and restoring peace and security to the area.

The blue helmets offer not only military support but also the necessary logistical and strategic expertise to counter the M23’s actions, which threaten the stability of North Kivu.
