DRC / A historic step: The DRC, under the presidency of H.E. Mr.Félix Tshisekedi, signs a disengagement agreement with the UN, putting an end to the MONUSCO mission

Under the leadership of President H.E. Mr Félix Tshisekedi, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) achieved a historic milestone on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, by signing a disengagement agreement with the United Nations (UN), marking the conclusion of the United Nations Mission for the Stabilisation of the Congo (MONUSCO). This symbolic ceremony represented the culmination of persistent efforts by the Congolese government.

The disengagement of MONUSCO, after more than two decades of presence in the DRC, signifies a significant turning point in the history of relations between the African nation and the international community.

Preceded by a five-year-long insistent request from the Congolese government, calling for the withdrawal of this UN force, the decision reflects the mixed assessments of MONUSCO’s effectiveness on the ground.

The rigorously negotiated disengagement agreement established a clear framework for the gradual withdrawal of MONUSCO, implementing mechanisms to ensure the continuity of stability and security in the DRC.

President Félix Tshisekedi, expressing confidence in his ability to assume these responsibilities, pledged to strengthen the National Security Forces to ensure a smooth transition.

The decision to end MONUSCO’s mission not only demonstrates the Congolese government’s commitment to taking a more active role in protecting its citizens but also showcases the growing maturity of the African nation on the international stage.

As the DRC turns the page on this collaboration of more than two decades, it prepares to write a new chapter in its history—one where national sovereignty and internal responsibility take center stage in its pursuit of lasting peace and greater stability.
