Côte d’Ivoire: Patrick Achi’s government dissolved

Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara has removed his Prime Minister, Patrick Achi. A new government will be formed in the coming days.

Patrick Achi is no longer Prime Minister of Côte d’Ivoire, as of this Friday. This is the decision taken by President Alassane Ouattara, and announced by the Secretary General of the Presidency, Abdourahmane Cissé.

«The President of the Republic, Alassane Ouattara, on Friday 6 October 2023, in accordance with Article 70 of the Constitution, signed a decree terminating the duties of the Prime Minister, Head of Government, and those of the members of the Government», declared Abdourahmane Cissé.

He added: «The President of the Republic expresses his gratitude to Prime Minister Patrick Achi and all the members of the government for their commitment to serving the nation over the past few years. Pending the appointment of the new Prime Minister and the establishment of the new government, the outgoing Prime Minister and members of the government are responsible for dealing with current affairs».

This news comes as no surprise in Côte d’Ivoire, where on 28 September the Head of State clearly announced his intention to reshuffle the government in mid-October.

This would take place after the new President of the Senate had taken office.

Patrick Achi became Prime Minister in March 2021, shortly after the death of Hamed Bakayoko. In April 2022, he stepped down before being reappointed by President Ouattara a few days later.

This time, the scenario seems a little different. Patrick Achi “has not given in his notice” as he did last time.

Will he still enjoy Ouattara’s confidence? Let’s wait and see.
