Cinema: “Avatar: The Way of the Water” records 6 million admissions in 2 weeks.

The film “Avatar: The Way of the Water” attracted more than 6 million viewers in the first two weeks after its release in South Korea, data from the Korea Film Council (KOFIC) showed on Wednesday.

James Cameron’s “Avatar 2” continues to float to the top of the North American box office, according to preliminary figures from trade firm Exhibitor Relations, despite the fact that theaters were partly deserted due to the severe winter storm that disrupted the Christmas weekend.

However, ticket sales for “Avatar 2” are stronger than for the first film, which attracted 6 million people in its first 17 days. “Avatar” attracted 13.6 million viewers in South Korea in 2009 to become the most watched foreign film in the country. It remains the biggest hit in the history of world cinema, with $2.9 billion in revenue worldwide.

The sequel to the 2009 sci-fi blockbuster grossed $90 million between Friday and Monday, a holiday in the US and Canada, in its second week of release.

It became the fifth film to break the 6 million mark this year and the second highest grossing foreign film behind “Top Gun: Maverick” which took in 8.17 million.

Released on 14 December, the sequel to James Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi blockbuster “Avatar”, including international admissions, has taken in a total of more than $881 million since its release, according to figures from box office mojo.
