Chinese New Year Gala sparks excitement in South Africa as cultural celebration takes center Stage

The promotional event for the 2024 Spring Festival Gala of the China Media Group (CMG) took place on Sunday at Nelson Mandela Square in Johannesburg, South Africa. The gala, known as «chunwan», is an annual celebration featuring a variety of performances, and this year’s event promises singing, dancing, opera, comedy sketches, cross-talk, martial arts, and acrobatics.

The live broadcast of the gala is scheduled for Friday at 8:00 p.m., on the eve of the Chinese New Year.

The gala has been a tradition since 1983 and is an integral part of Chinese New Year celebrations for many, with families gathering around their televisions to watch the spectacular performances.

 The promotional event in Johannesburg aimed to create excitement and a festive atmosphere for the over 300,000 overseas Chinese living in South Africa, as well as others interested in Chinese culture.

The Chinese Consul General in Johannesburg, Pan Qingjiang, used the occasion to express optimism about the current “golden age” in Sino-South African relations.

 He hoped that the Spring Festival Gala would not only bring joy to people worldwide but also serve as a bridge for cultural exchanges between China and other nations.

The event featured a video projection of the gala’s promotional content on a large screen, adding to the festive ambiance.

The consul general emphasized the importance of the gala as a cultural hallmark in China and expressed a desire for its broadcast to reach more foreign countries.

Attendees, including local residents and students, expressed enthusiasm for the unique and vibrant cultural elements presented in the gala.
