China launches investigation into allegations of fuel tankers used for cooking oil transport

The Chinese government has announced an investigation into allegations that fuel tankers have been used to transport cooking oil without proper cleaning, following widespread online outrage over potential food contamination.

According to state-run Beijing News, these tankers, initially used for carrying fuel, were found transporting food products such as cooking oil and syrup without adequate decontamination.

The practice, reportedly an “open secret” within the industry, has sparked significant public concern.

This controversy has dominated Chinese social media, with millions of views and tens of thousands of posts on Weibo, China’s equivalent to Twitter.

One post with over 8,000 likes emphasized the critical importance of food safety, while another noted the challenges of survival in such an environment.

Comparisons were drawn to the 2008 Sanlu milk scandal, which saw 300,000 children fall ill and six deaths due to melamine contamination in powdered milk.

Users expressed skepticism that a mere statement would suffice to address the severity of this new scandal.
