Chelsea condemns racist chants by Argentine players, Including Enzo Fernandez

Chelsea FC has issued a statement condemning the racist chants sung by some Argentine players, including their midfielder Enzo Fernandez, targeting black players of the French national team following Argentina’s Copa America victory over Colombia (1-0).

This incident recalls previous celebrations in 2022 when Emiliano Martinez and his teammates mocked Kylian Mbappé after winning the World Cup against France.

During a live Instagram session by Fernandez, the Argentine players chanted, “They play for France but come from Angola, they run well, they love screwing trans, their mother is Nigerian, their father Cambodian, but on the passport: French.”

Fernandez abruptly ended the live session, and the backlash has been swift, with reactions from Chelsea players like Wesley Fofana condemning the act.

Despite Fernandez’s public apology, the French Football Federation (FFF) has filed a complaint against the Argentine team.

Chelsea has also initiated internal disciplinary procedures, emphasizing their zero-tolerance policy towards discriminatory behavior.

The club stated, “Chelsea FC considers any form of discriminatory behavior totally unacceptable. We are proud to be a diverse and inclusive club where people from all cultures, communities, and identities feel welcome. We recognize and appreciate our player’s public apology and will use this as an opportunity to raise awareness.”

The upcoming weeks are expected to be challenging for Fernandez, especially with his return to Chelsea’s heavily French-influenced dressing room.
