CAMEROON: André Onana’s triumphant return to the national team

André Onana had been out of the Cameroon national team since the last World Cup. After a series of twists and turns and being called up by coach Rigobert Song for the crucial match against Burundi, the Manchester United goalkeeper announced himself in a statement on Monday: he is back and will answer his country’s call!

It’s a timely return, given that the Indomitable Lions must not lose next Tuesday’s final qualifier against Burundi if they are to qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

«In the world of football, as in life, decisive moments arise that require crucial choices to be made. In recent months, I have been confronted with trials marked by injustice and manipulation. However, my unwavering love and attachment to my homeland, Cameroon, remain intact», began  André Onana, who has been on the sidelines since his altercation with Song during the World Cup.

He went on to declare his love for Cameroon: «My desire to represent my country has never wavered since I was young, and this aspiration remains an inseparable part of my identity. Nothing and no-one can shake this conviction. I answer my nation’s call with unshakeable certainty, aware that my return is not just about honouring my dream, but also about responding to the expectations and support of the Cameroonian people, who deserve a national team determined to shine».

The former Ajax Amsterdam and Barcelona goalkeeper could therefore make his 35th appearance for Cameroon at the Roumde Adja Stadium in Garoua against the Burundi Swallows on 12 September.
