Burkina-Faso: The government has just decided to reimburse the salary deductions of striking civil servants

In Burkina, the government is taking strong action to facilitate social peace and mobilise all components of society in the fight against terrorism. The latest is the decision to reimburse the deductions made on salaries from 2016 to 2021 following the strike movements of public servants.

The Prime Minister, on the instructions of the Head of State Ibrahim Traoré, signed a communiqué on Monday 28 October to reimburse the salary deductions of civil servants who observed work stoppage movements over the period 2016 to 2021.

“In order to take into account the spirit that prevailed in their taking, particularly the establishment of a peaceful social climate to mobilize all energies in the fight against terrorism, the government hereby decides to reimburse, exceptionally, the deductions for strike operated, exclusively during the period from 2016 to 2021,” reads the statement.

“Consequently, only the condition relating to the proof of the cut made should be taken into account,” the note said.

Indeed, several demonstrations of discontent by public workers occurred over the period indicated.

As a reminder, the strike of Burkina’s magistrates who demanded “more independence for the judiciary through the adoption of all the application decrees” observed throughout the national territory as of 24 February 2016.

In the same year, the secondary and higher education teachers’ unions also launched strike orders, which were respected throughout the country. They demanded better living and working conditions.

The decision to reimburse the cuts in salaries was one of the appeasement measures taken by the President to encourage a more participatory struggle.

Captain Ibrahim Traoré values all areas, including society, which is called upon to accompany him in his mission. “In Burkina Faso, everything is urgent, from security to defence, health, social action, infrastructure, everything is urgent,” he said on 2 October during a meeting with the secretaries general of the ministries.
