Burkina Faso: Launch of the National Internal Security Strategy (SNSI) 2024-2028

In a significant stride towards bolstering its national security, Burkina Faso officially commenced the development of the 2024-2028 National Internal Security Strategy (SNSI). This strategic initiative follows the adoption of the national security policy in March 2023, underscoring the country’s unwavering commitment to addressing persistent security challenges within its borders.

The launch ceremony took place on Friday, February 9, 2024, in Ouagadougou, under the presidency of Émile Zerbo, Minister of Territorial Administration, Decentralization, and Security (MATDS), represented by its Secretary-General.

This event marks the initiation of a crucial process aimed at defining priorities and actions to strengthen the country’s internal security over the next four years.

Since 2015, Burkina Faso has grappled with a particularly complex security situation, marked by recurrent attacks from armed terrorist groups in certain regions of the country.

This threat, akin to that faced by its neighbors Mali and Niger, has had severe humanitarian and social consequences.

Beyond the loss of lives, these attacks have resulted in massive population displacements, the closure of numerous state structures, and the growth of organized transnational crime.

The  National Internal Security Strategy (SNSI) 2024-2028 aims to address these challenges by formulating a comprehensive and coordinated approach to internal security, taking into account humanitarian, social, and economic dimensions.

Building upon the achievements of the previous national security policy, this strategy seeks to enhance the capabilities of security forces, improve governance and coordination among various stakeholders, and promote sustainable development in areas affected by insecurity.

Through this proactive initiative, Burkina Faso affirms its determination to ensure the protection of its citizens and guarantee the stability and prosperity of the entire nation.
