Burkina Faso: A draft law on social housing tariff guidelines aimed at reducing the financial burden on citizens is underway

During a plenary session of the Transitional Legislative Assembly (ALT) in Burkina Faso on September 29, 2023, deputies discussed four oral questions. The first question concerned the assessment of the implementation of the private housing lease law and means to combat the constant rise in rents.

The Minister of Transport, representing the Minister of Housing, stated that measures were underway to develop a law on social housing and limit the surge in rental prices.

He also mentioned a housing construction program and other initiatives aimed at alleviating the population’s housing concerns.

The plenary session, presided over by the President of the ALT, lasted for more than seven hours and involved ministers from the Ministry of Commerce, Environment, Infrastructure, and Transport.

The Minister of Transport emphasized that housing availability and cost are major challenges, and the government is working to expand the housing supply to meet the needs of all social classes.

A new law on real estate promotion has been adopted to support this goal.

The Minister also mentioned a program for the restructuring of unplanned areas and land regularization in urban areas, as well as measures to regulate private housing leases.

He discussed the development of a law on the cost of social housing, feasibility studies for affordable rental housing, and other initiatives aimed at controlling the demand for rental housing in the country’s major cities.
