«Building 5», A Film Denouncing Housing Problems

The film «Building 5» by director Ladj Ly premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Inspired by his own childhood in the housing estates of Clichy Montfermeil, in Building 5 the director tackles the growing housing crisis, against a backdrop of racial tensions, poverty, prejudice and police blunders.

For Lady Ly, the reality of the suburbs has not changed for several years.

The film tells the story of Habi, a young woman from a disadvantaged suburb in the Paris region, who becomes involved in associations to help local residents, and quickly becomes a political figure in the city.

Faced with urban redevelopment plans, Habi and other residents of her dilapidated building try to resist eviction.

Ladj Ly’s film «Les Miserable», the winner of the 2020 Césars, shook France on the issue of police violence in the suburbs.

In the same committed vein, building 5 will be released in cinemas on 06 December.
