ASECNA: Burkina Faso takes the Chair of the International Agency’s Committee of Ministers

Roland Somda, Burkina Faso’s Minister of Transport, has been appointed to lead the supreme governing body of the Agency for Air Navigation Safety in Africa and Madagascar (ASECNA).

This governing body, known as the Committee of Ministers, includes the ministers of civil aviation from ASECNA’s member states.

The presidency of this rotating committee has now shifted to Burkina Faso, succeeding the Republic of Congo, where Minister Honoré Sayi recently completed a one-year term.

The handover occurred during the 73rd Ordinary Session of the Committee of Ministers, held on Friday, July 26, in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso.

Following the session, a delegation from the Committee of Ministers was received by Burkina Faso’s President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, for a debriefing.

ASECNA, established in December 1959, currently includes 19 member states.

The agency has maintained positive relations with Burkina Faso, notably expressing its support in May 2023 for the rehabilitation of the Bobo-Dioulasso airport.

Additionally, ASECNA endorsed the appointment of Burkinabe Louis Bakienon as Secretary General of the African and Malagasy Civil Aviation Authorities.

With Somda’s new role, Burkina Faso strengthens its influence in regional aviation governance, continuing its active engagement with ASECNA’s initiatives.
