Apple integrates ChatGPT to enhance Siri and compete in AI Race

Apple announced major upgrades to Siri and its operating systems by integrating OpenAI’s ChatGPT at its annual developers’ conference. The new personalized AI system, “Apple Intelligence,” aims to improve user experience across Apple devices.

Starting this autumn, updates to iPhone and Mac operating systems will feature ChatGPT, enhancing text and content generation tools.

Apple CEO Tim Cook believes this integration will elevate the company’s products.

However, the announcement caused a 1.91% drop in Apple’s share price.

Elon Musk criticized the partnership over data security concerns, threatening to ban iPhones from his companies. Apple has not responded to his claims.

Amid competition from rivals like Microsoft and Nvidia, Apple is under pressure to introduce advanced AI features.

Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, noted that while Apple’s AI system might reassure investors, relying on ChatGPT underscores Siri’s limitations.

“Apple Intelligence” will be embedded in every Apple app and product, offering functionalities similar to Microsoft’s Copilot without extra costs.

Siri has been revamped with a new interface and more conversational features. Apple emphasized security, with some processing done on devices and larger tasks handled in the cloud without data storage.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, highlighted the privacy-centric design of the new system, integrating powerful generative models into Apple devices.

This integration marks a shift for Apple, which typically guards its products closely.

It indicates recognition of ChatGPT’s AI dominance. Apple also announced the UK release of its Vision Pro mixed reality headset and introduced new features like satellite text sending, scheduled messages, head gestures for AirPods Pro control, a dedicated password app, and the ability to hide or lock apps with Face ID or passcodes.
