Apollo theater celebrates 90th anniversary with tributes to R&B Legends Babyface and Usher

The Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York, recently celebrated its 90th anniversary with a grand tribute to R&B legends Babyface and Usher.

During the event, Babyface, whose real name is Kenneth Edmonds, had the honor of flipping the switch for the lighting ceremony and exploring the new immersive exhibits at the Observatory Experience.

The multi-talented singer-songwriter was awarded a lifetime achievement accolade for his extensive contributions to the music industry.

Expressing his gratitude, Babyface said, “I’m deeply thankful to all my fans. This recognition is incredible. I want to thank the Apollo for this honor. I never imagined I’d be here because I always feared getting booed. But that didn’t happen, and I’m truly happy to have come to the Apollo. When I got the call that the Apollo wanted to honor me, I was overwhelmed with joy. God made this happen for me.”

With 13 Grammy Awards to his name, Babyface has been instrumental in shaping the careers of stars like Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, Aretha Franklin, and Whitney Houston. Mary J. Blige and Clive Davis were among those who praised his significant impact on African American music and culture during the ceremony.

“Babyface, you have the power to touch and transform any artist’s life. Thank you for touching my life and changing it with your talent and presence. I love you. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor at the Apollo Hall of Fame,” stated Mary J. Blige.

Since its opening in 1914, the Apollo Theater has been a cultural landmark, hosting a diverse array of performances, including soul, jazz, R&B, and hip-hop concerts, as well as the famed amateur night, “Showtime at the Apollo.”

This honor cements Babyface’s legacy, with his name now part of the iconic marquee on 125th Street.

Usher also received a career achievement award during the event.

The proceeds from the Apollo Theater’s 90th-anniversary celebrations will be used to support the theater’s year-round artistic, educational, and community initiatives.
